Secret Santa Rules: How to Play and Fun Variations
Secret Santa is a gift exchange where each person is secretly assigned someone to buy for. These are the basic rules most groups follow, plus a few twists you can try.
The basic rules
- Everyone gives one gift and receives one gift. Nobody is left out and nobody is assigned to themselves.
- Keep your match secret. Do not tell anyone who you drew, even after shopping. The mystery is the point.
- Stick to the budget. Spending far more or far less than agreed can make others uncomfortable.
- Respect the date. Have your gift ready, wrapped and labelled with the recipient’s name — not yours — by the exchange day.
- Keep it appropriate. Especially at work, choose gifts that anyone would be comfortable opening in front of others.
Etiquette tips
- If you are unsure what to buy, check the recipient’s wish list or ask a mutual friend discreetly.
- Include a gift receipt where you can.
- If you can no longer take part, tell the organizer as early as possible so they can redraw.
- Thank your Secret Santa, even if you never find out who it was.
Popular variations
Themed Secret Santa
Everyone buys within a theme — something handmade, something to read, a local treat, or a single colour. Themes make shopping easier and the reveal more entertaining.
Guess your Santa
Givers stay anonymous until everyone has tried to guess who chose their present, based on the gift and any cryptic clues on the tag.
Secret Santa by post
For families or teams spread across cities, gifts are mailed directly to the recipient and opened together on a video call. Collect addresses early and leave extra time for shipping.
Experience or charity swap
Instead of an object, give an experience, a homemade voucher, or a donation to a cause the recipient cares about.
